MORE SINGING OPPORTUNITIES

In addition to the New England Youth A Capella Jamboree, there are other singing opportunities available in 2005 in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

The New Hampshire High School Barbershop Festival

The festival is held this year on Saturday March 12th, 2006.  It is sponsored by the Concord Coachmen Chorus of the Concord NH Chapter (www.harmonize.com/coachmen/index.html). The Granite Statesmen perform each year on a show that features several barbershop choruses in New Hampshire, along with top notch local quartets, and choruses made up of local high school students, with separate choruses for boys and girls. Each chorus learns 3 songs. These choruses draw representatives from all over the state. The students are sent sheet music and learning tracks prior to the day of the performance. They then gather at the performance site early in the morning on the day of the performance and spend the day preparing for the show under the tutelage of representatives from The Barbershop Harmony Society, Sweet Adelines International and Harmony, Inc. After a day of fellowship and song in preparation for the evening's show, the students take the stage to sing their hearts out in the Barbershop Style for an assembly of family, friends, and local barbershoppers. It is supported by nearly every barbershop chorus in NH. For more information, contact Dan Signor, event chairman and a New Hampshire choral music educator. Email: dan_lead@yahoo.com.

The Metro West High School Barbershop Festival

The festival is held this year on Saturday March 4th, 2006. It is sponsored by the Sounds of Concord Chorus of the Concord, MA Chapter (www.soundsofconcord.org).  This is a choral event for high school boys and girls from across the Metro West Massachuesetts area. Students come together for a day of instruction by top quartets and music educators. With boys and girls choruses,  each chorus learns 3 songs (sheet music is provided months before the event). The evening concert for family, friends, and the communtiy was supported by the Sounds of Concord Chorus. For tickets to the show call 866-206-9067 ext. 7622. For more information about the Festival, contact Scott Domaratius 781-789-6882 email: youth@soundsofconcord.org.

Harmony Explosion Camp Northeast

Held this year from August 10-13, 2006 at Fitchburg State College, high school teachers and male singers are invited from within 350 miles of the site. Sponsored by the Barbershop Harmony Society and the Northeastern District, see the Harmony Explosion website (www.hxcamp.nedymih.org).

Students will receive learning tracks and sheet music prior to attending. A variety of a cappella music, including several styles of TTBB, and barbershop will be learned. Six songs will be prepared for a performance in a concert on Saturday night. A curriculum of vocal technique and development, effective warm-ups, ensemble singing, and rehearsal techniques, plus other classes. Quartet coaching will be added to the program this year. Top clinicians and a teaching quartet will be working with the students.

There is also a full music educator curriculum. Teachers who come will attend seminars on topics including warm-ups, vocal production, directing techniques, quartet coaching, riser placement, non-verbal communication and the conductor, recruiting for your chorus, and more. Music educators will be sent a  course selection listing for  the Harmony College Northeast curriculum which runs parallel to the HX Camp. Also back by great popular demand will be the educator chorus! The music educators and collegiate MENC students will be formed into a mixed chorus. Music will be sent in advance.

The camp’s staff handles all chaperoning duties so the music educators are not burdened in any way.  For more information contact, Scott Domaratius, HX Camp Coordinator email: hxcamp@rcn.com.
