QUARTET PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES

Here are some performance opportunity ideas for school quartets (and ensembles/VLQs) that other schools have done. Once a barbershop quartet or ensemble (VLQ) has been formed in a school and the group has a few songs under their belts, they will be ready to perform.  A couple of major reasons for performance of such music might simply be to help the group build its confidence and performance skills, to entertain, and /or to recruit for the school vocal music program or choir.

Here are some performance opportunities that middle and high school barbershop quartets and ensembles have been known to do:

  1. Sing where ever and whenever possible.

  2. Sing for clubs and organizations in school.

  3. Sing for banquets.

  4. Sing for school sports programs (sing National Anthem at football, baseball, basketball games etc.)

  5. Sing for town and city sports programs (baseball, softball, hockey, basketball, football leagues.)

  6. Sing for semi-professional and professional sports in your area.

  7. Sing for Rotary, Kiwanis, Eagles, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, Boys Club, YMCA, Recreational Center, Senior Center, Elks Clubs, Moose Lodges, VFW, American Legion, service organizations, etc.

  8. Sing for PTA and School Board meetings.

  9. Sing for convocations or at intermissions of school or community theater performances.

  10. Sing for birthdays on the school pubic address system.

  11. Develop a Singing Telegram Program for the school for holiday (Carol-o-Grams), birthdays, Valentine’s Day, Mothers Day-O-Grams, Teacher Appreciation Day, Secretary’s Day, etc

  12. Singing Telegrams for birthdays at local nursing homes

  13. Sing concerts for nursing home residents

  14. Sing Christmas Caroling in malls, nursing homes

  15. Sing during regularly scheduled concerts.

  16. Sing on talent shows.

  17. Sing to the feeder schools in the School District Tour to entertain the underclassmen, get support for and recruit younger singers into the vocal music programs in the school district.

  18. Sing on school plays and local community theater productions.

  21. Sing in any local community fund raiser

  22. Sing at summer bandstand concerts

  24. Get a feature article printed in the school paper about the quartet’s activities.

  25. Send a press release to local papers announcing information about the quartet and listing contact phone numbers for potential performances.

  26. Get publicity on the radio about the quartet.

  27. Get the support of the school administration and school staff by talking about the quartet with schools colleagues.

  28. Invite students/teachers to an open rehearsal – sort of a guest rehearsal.

  29. Sponsor a choral department “Open House” with food, and invite the entire school to see what’s happening there. Have a quartet of ensemble perform.

  30. Print flyers announcing the quartet’s performance schedule.

  31. Set up a novice quartet show for the music students, featuring the quartet.

  32. Compete in State and Regional Solo and Ensemble contests.

  33. Visit the local barbershop chapter and request to sing on their annual show and other performances.
